    “Jom Makan” and spend a relaxing Autumn Friday evening with us for networking, served with authentic Malaysian and Singaporean style dishes. The word “Jom” is a Malay slang which carries the meaning of “let’s go,” and “Makan” is the Malay word for eating. We are very excited to have 2 special guests who are from Singapore and Malaysia respectively for our informal guest speakers during makan. Su-Lin Tan Originally from Singapore, Su-Lin joined the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in 2020 after the Australian Financial Review where she covered housing and commercial property, Asian business and street talk and investigations. She is a qualified accountant and worked in investment banking and funds management both in London and Sydney before becoming a journalist. Premesh Chandran Premesh was the CEO and co-founder of Malaysiakini, and served as non-executive director of KiniTV and FG Media. He believes in finding practical ways to achieve one’s ideals. He sometimes wonders how he got into this, but then he remembers the pre-Internet media and is glad that he did. Premesh left Malaysiakini in Feb 2022, after serving more than 22 years as its CEO.     In 2021, we celebrated AMSA’s 50th Anniversary as one of the oldest Malaysian and Singaporean associations in Australia, to recognise the contribution of the many members and committees that were involved in the last 50 years.   • Business After 5 with Andrew Buay (VP of Optus)

    This was an amazing opportunity to network, socialise, understand the Malaysian culture and good food and be inspired by inspirational speaker. AMSA members benefited from expanding their network of people and getting advices that will assist their careers and businesses. AMSA was honoured to have the opportunity of having Andrew Buay, Vice President, Group Sustainability at Optus, presenting an interesting and inspirational presentation on pathway to purpose, in May 2021. We were joined by around 50 of our members and non-members from all walks of life. Andrew Buay shared various stories about his personal life, professional career, and his love of Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine. Andrew Buay spoke about ‘Purpose’ and shared his experiences on how he discovered passion and purpose. This inspired all the attendees to reflect on these impactful words and utilise this philosophy in their daily lives. Andrew encouraged all the attendees to not be afraid of taking risks if you are chasing an opportunity that you are passionate about. He shared his stories where Andrew stepped down a senior position in order to pursue a passion in coaching and assisting people in establishing their purpose in what they do. This event invited all attendees to taste the delicious Malaysian cuisine while listening to an inspiring life lesson and encouraging speech. The attendees were also given the opportunity to socialise and network with the rest of the attendees. It was a great chance for many to share their business experiences and their aspirations. There was also a time for all attendees to introduce themselves and what they do to the rest of the attendees as well as Andrew Buay. At the end of the speech, there was also a Q and A session that attendees were able to ask Andrew questions and advices.   • AMSA Lunar New Year Dinner 2021

    Celebrating family, friends and togetherness is a major theme during Lunar New Year. Our dinner celebrations have been one of our most popular events on our AMSA calendar. Delicious banquets of food, lion dances, social networking and fantastic prizes make this event a winning combination and a must attend. The AMSA Chinese New Year Dinner is one of highlights in the annual event calendar. The 2021 celebration welcoming the year was no exception. We welcomed honored guests, members and guests at the Palace Chinese Restaurant. The lively celebrations were kicked off with a welcome message from our president Colin Lee, with notable addresses from Hon Victor Dominello MP and our sponsors. We had fun drawing fantastic prizes including hotel stays at Marriott Vacation and Grace Hotel, restaurant vouchers at Assembly Bar, Mamak, Paparich, Hilton, food and wine from Ayam and Bunnamagoo and finally entertainment vouchers at Idarts Zen. Congratulations to the lucky raffle winners. Chinese New Year celebration would not be complete without the Lion Dance. The lion brings propensity and good luck for the new year. The loud bright performance chase away evil spirits and creates the festive atmosphere that characterizes the festive occasion. Some guests gave away red packets to the lion in exchange for a personal greeting by the lion. The evening concluded with the DJ keeping the energy high and for the active souls a brilliant backdrop for some dancing. Guests received a thank you gift, the neck pillow proved a massive hit. Refund will be arranged over the next few days to those who have bought the tickets. *For members or non-members who are interested in group booking (table of 10), please email us at contact@amsa.com.au EVENT HIGHLIGHTS This year in 2022, we welcome the year of the Tiger and we are proud that this year’s AMSA Lunar New Year Dinner is associated with the Willoughby City Council’s “Chatswood Year of the Tiger Festival” – a prestigious Lunar New Year celebration featuring art, music, performance, food, and traditional cultural celebrations. 12 course dinner Certain dishes are eaten during the Lunar New Year for their symbolic meaning. Lucky food will be served on this day, which is believed to bring good luck for the coming year. The auspicious symbolism of these traditional Lunar New Year foods is based on their pronunciations or appearance. Not only do the dishes themselves matter, but also the preparation, and ways of serving and eating mean a lot. “Yee Sang” (Prosperity Toss Salad) “Yee Sang” is one of the dishes most Chinese Malaysians and Singaporeans anticipate and look forward to during the Lunar New Year. Yee Sang means increase in abundance and vigor. The tossing of the Prosperity Toss Salad is a unique experience not to be missed. “Yee sang” is the infamous communal tradition inherited by multi-generations, which brings a lot of joy to the community. Lion Dance A Lunar New Year celebration will not be complete without the Lion Dance. It is performed to attract prosperity and good luck for the new year. The lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. At our dinner, dinner guests will have the opportunity to give away red packets to the lions in exchange for a personal greeting. Lucky Draw Prizes One of the highlights of the dinner is the lucky draw prizes. Dinner attendees will have a chance to purchase some raffle tickets for a chance to enter into the lucky draw. Our strong partnership with the government and diverse range of private business sectors through corporate membership has enabled us to offer a range of lucky draw prizes.
